ARE JEWISH-ARAB RELATIONSHIPS

INFLUENCED BY CHILDHOOD BONDS?

Haneen Kinani and Yael Keinan

Action Now+Network blog post on a recent lunch with two student Ambassadors from the Hand in Hand Center for Jewish-Arab Education.  A unique insight into educating the Jewish and Arab communities in a country at war and an astounding school in Israel for Jewish and Arab students, that just could pave a pathway toward peace.

CRIMINALIZING THE HOMELESS IN SAN FRANCISCO:

A BEAUTIFUL CITY’S DIRTY SECRET

As a child, I lived in a quiet neighborhood in the city, close to busy Market Street but enough off the beaten path to be almost hidden.   When I was in the fifth grade, my mother and I arrived home from school one day to find a strange man sleeping in our doorway.  Although she was more than startled and slightly alarmed, my mother immediately went into the kitchen to gather some food for this man.   He gratefully accepted it, and then simply left – presumably to go back to the anonymity of the streets.   I never saw him again.   READ MORE HERE

WITH MY OWN EYES

There is a beacon of hope in the Middle East and I was fortunate to be able to make the long journey from Los Angeles to the Arab village of Kfar Kara in Israel to witness it.  There, against all odds, is one of four ‘Hand in Hand’ schools that exist to educate Israeli Arab and Jewish children together.

END OF LIFE QUESTIONS WE MUST ALL CONFRONT:

HOSPICE CARE OR CONTINUED TREATMENT FOR

TERMINALLY ILL PATIENTS

Hamlet's monologue asks the famous determining question "To be or not to be”.  This classic question could easily be applied to end of life care, as “to treat or not to treat”.   At the end of life, is it best to suffer slowly,  i.e., to prolong life with painful treatment that will ultimately prove futile, or to accept death as a natural part of life’s cycle.   This subject is in the news because the debate over Medicare benefits and health care reform has aroused public concern. CAN WE END HUNGER?

FIGHTING GLOBAL HUNGER AND PURIFYING WATER

WITH THE MORINGA TREE

According to Bread for the World, 1.2 billion people on this planet are malnourished, and this number has increased in the past 5 years.  That’s 15% of the world’s population, and many of these are children.  In fact, every day 16,000 children die from hunger related causes.  But this doesn’t have to be.

The Morenga tree will grow in the same parts of the world where malnutrition is the worst.  These nutritious leaves can be dried and powdered for future use and will keep for months without refrigeration.  READ MORE HERE
